Local nursing student chooses Boissevain Medical Centre for work practicum

by JENNIFER LAVIOLETTE

Step by step the shortage of nursing staff in Boissevain is slowly beginning to resolve itself. Earlier this year Nicole McCorrister, a RN student and Rikki Yahiro, a med student, signed on as part of the Boissevain Health Committee sponsorship program. This week, Tara Megaffin began her work practicum at the Boissevain Medical Centre as part of the Practical Nursing Program through Assiniboine Community College (ACC).

Megaffin and her family moved to Boissevain six years ago and instantly fell in love with the community and the people. For Megaffin, living in a rural community is nothing out of the ordinary, since she has spent most of her life living in small towns.

She chose to do her work practicum at the Boissevain Health Centre because she currently resides in Boissevain and hopes to get employment with the hospital or Evergreen Personal Care Home when she is done. Megaffin is flexible with shift work and has no problems working evenings and weekends.

“I had no concerns with working in a rural community setting,” noted Megaffin. “I find rural centers more personable, allow for more one on one time with patients and give nurses more opportunity to give personal attention to patients.”

The Practical Nursing Program offered at ACC runs for 15 months and Megaffin will be done her course and graduating on December 15. Her work practicum at the Boissevain Health Centre lasts for seven weeks, giving her experience at the hospital until the beginning of December. She will then proceed to write her licensing exam on January 10, 2007 and applying for a nursing position in Boissevain.

“I want to continue to raise my kids here, my husband has employment here and this is where we want to be,” commented Megaffin. “There are nursing shortages everywhere right now, but I would choose to work in Boissevain.”
