Trust fund established for accident victims

by PAUL RAYNER

When a tragedy strikes the heart of a family, it also strikes the heart of a community. A trust fund has been established for the family of a former Boissevain resident, Thomas Peterson, who was tragically killed in an automobile accident earlier this month. Friends of the family and the community grouped together to organize a trust fund for Tom’s wife, Hailey Peterson and her two children Abby (age 3) and Cody (age 2). Donations can be made at either the Royal Bank or the Turtle Mountain Credit Union in Boissevain.

The tragic accident occurred at approximately 2:00 pm on August 14, when Killarney RCMP were called to a two-vehicle accident on Provincial Road #443 about 2 kms east of Ninga. The accident claimed the life of 32-year old Thomas Peterson, formerly of Boissevain.

Peterson, his wife Hayley, and their two children were traveling eastbound in a pickup truck when they collided with the rear of an eastbound semi trailer as the tractor trailer was turning into a north field. According to the RCMP, after the collision, Peterson lost control, veering into the ditch, with the truck rolling several times before coming to rest on its roof.

The accident was attended by RCMP, the Killarney/Turtle Mountain Fire Department and Emergency Measures Services. The family was extracted from the truck, with both adults having to be cut out of the vehicle.

Thomas Peterson was transported by ambulance to Boissevain Health Centre where he was pronounced dead as a result of injuries sustained in the crash. Hayley Peterson, 26, and the two children were transported by ambulance to Killarney Hospital. One child was later transported to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, while the other was treated and released.

Alcohol was not a factor in the accident and all occupants were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash. The driver of the semi trailer, a Ninga area farmer, was not injured in the accident.

The funeral for Thomas Peterson was held on Tuesday, August 22. All family members are now recuperating back in Boissevain.

The family had moved to Leduc, Alberta earlier this year, and was back in Boissevain for a wedding the preceding weekend.
