New diner to open downtown by PAUL RAYNER With a building related theme and a main street location, hopes are that a new eatery can become a part of downtown Boissevain. A December 1 opening is planned for The Dining Car, which is located in the old Cherry Creek Gallery. According to proprietor Kim Rickard, its railroad theme is based on the particulars of the area. “There is the (Romance of the Railway) mural on the side of the building,” Rickard explained, “and downtown has a bit of a railway theme already, so it was a good fit. We hope to have the uniform, menus, the whole railway atmosphere in here.” Rickard, originally from Boissevain, has restaurant experience, starting in school when she worked at the old Garden Motel. She also worked at several locations in Winnipeg, including running the kitchen at Yuk Yuk’s comedy club, before heading off to nursing, a profession she has practiced for nearly 20 years. “This is my first go at it since.” She feels the location of the endeavour is its biggest opportunity. “The place was downtown and available,” she said. “It is a great location to provide lunches and coffee for people who work downtown. This is a perfect opportunity and a perfect location.” Rickard said The Dining Car would focus on providing home made nutritious meals, rather than burgers and fries as standards. As well as herself, she is looking to have one part time position working in the restaurant, which could become several casual workers. Hours at this point are planned to be Tuesday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with brunch served on Sunday from 11 to 2. Evening hours may be included in the New Year. As well, the building will be open for meetings and she plans to do a little catering after hours. Rickard is presently getting the restaurant into shape for her opening, and is looking forward to getting going. “This is something I have actually always wanted to do.” |
