New library, more industry and services, and cottage lots, top picks at Round Table by PAUL RAYNER Council for the Town of Boissevain got a peek into the results from a recent look at the needs of the community. On November 21, the Turtle Mountain Community Development Corporation hosted a public meeting on development for Boissevain and area. Successes from the past were brought up, as well as ideas for the future. The crowd was broken down into two groups, who brainstormed on ideas of ‘what the community needed’. When that was completed, the results were put on the wall and participants were urged to place coloured stickers on what they felt were high quality ideas. Blue stickers were for priority of idea; red stickers were ones where individuals were willing to invest time or money to see its completion. In the report provided from TMCDC, the new library, including cultural centre, came out on top. With a total of 17 stickers 9 blue and 8 red, it came with the altogether highest score. The top five also included 12 stickers (9 blue, 3 red) for moving industry to complement exiting industry, 11 stickers (5 blue, 6 red) for servicing truck traffic/after hours emergency service, 10 (8,2) for good restaurant/fine dining, and 9 each for more cottage lots with lake front (6 blue, 2 red), and sheep and goat processing plant with more sheep and goats (7 blue, 2 red). Other ideas that rated high included more seniors housing, more mechanics, finding a trade or job for grade 12 graduates, and developing light manufacturing. Others that did not get a single sticker included a conference centre at the Peace Garden; using carbon sequestering credits to our advantage and the development of a world heritage centre. The report was presented to the Town Council at their December 11 meeting. The idea of the meeting and idea collection was to give direction to TMCDC on what they should be working on. |
