Let's go to Kindergarten

by NATALIE HUNT

A new program started this week in Boissevain that benefits children and their parents.

“Here we come – get ready – get set – Let’s go to Kindergarten” is a four-week program, which has no cost to those involved, where children and their parents go the Boissevain school once a week to get acquainted with the school and some of its staff members.

Kerry McRuer, whose idea started the program, said the idea is important.

“I just felt we needed something like this.”

McRuer’s daughter, Alyssa, 4, is excited to be in the program. Alyssa saw a tent in the kindergarten room a little while ago and she can’t wait to see what it’s for.

The Promise Years Parent Child Coalition sponsors the program, which is supposed to help alleviate the stress of starting kindergarten for both parents and children.

Each week there is a new theme and craft or physical activity. There are also healthy peanut free snacks. Week one’s snack was cheese and crackers, vegetables and water. However, week four will have a celebration cake.

The first theme was “This is Our School.” The activities were a school related craft, a free draw of the child and his or her parents, and a tour of the school.

McRuer didn’t do everything on her own though. She has an assistant to help at the school – Jenna Campbell who took Early Childhood Development with McRuer.

She said Vicki Neufeld from the Promise Years Parent Child Coalition helped put everything together.

“She’s been a great support.”

McRuer said that planning the program has turned out to be a lot more than she expected.

“It’s exciting, but I’m nervous.”

McRuer said the teachers at the school have supported the project one hundred per cent.

McRuer said she thinks there are huge benefits in the program.

“The main benefit is the communication between parent, child, and school.”
