Duty Free Changes hands by PAUL RAYNER The new owner of the Peace Garden Duty Free shop will not have a learning curve before fitting into the position. Kent Turner purchased the store, located just outside of the Peace Garden on the Canada/US border, effective July 1. Turner said he was at the store for all but a month of its existence, which began when Colleen and the late Wayne Coxworth established it in 1991. “I have been here for 17 years,” Turner stated, “so I figured I was either going to move on or buy it. So I made (Colleen) an offer and she took it.” The duty free shop, which sells liquor, perfume, tobacco and souvenirs to American visitors returning to their country, is a good business that Turner obviously has a fair bit of experience in. He feels that is an asset both business and regulation wise. “Oh yeah. Over 17 years you listen to what people want and what they don’t want. You also have to relay information about their exemptions to them without confusion. Someone else coming from outside would have a lot of learning to do.” With the purchase, Turner also bought the name Peace Garden Duty Free, which he intends to keep for the business. With an already successful business, apart from more advertising, he does not intend to make any changes to operation.
